Myth-bust

Is breakfast really the most important meal of the day?

“Breakfast like a king…” — you’ve heard it your whole life. But when researchers actually put the claim to the test, the story turned out to be more interesting than the slogan.

What the research actually says

A systematic review of randomised controlled trials published in the BMJ in 2019 pooled the best available experiments on eating versus skipping breakfast. The surprise: adding breakfast didn’t help people eat less across the day, and the small average weight difference in the trials actually favoured the skippers — not by much (well under a kilo), but enough to bury the idea that breakfast is a weight-loss tool in itself.

So the old rule is a marketing line, not a law of nature. But — and this is where a dietitian earns her keep — that’s not the same as saying breakfast doesn’t matter.

The honest answer: it depends on your morning

The pattern matters more than the clock. What you eat across the whole day — and whether it’s a pattern you can keep — beats any single “most important” meal.
